Here are some hot new trends I'm expecting to see a lot of this year:

Aliens Made Them Stop Doing It: Vulcan couples counselors, Wraith as anti-yenta, time travellers show them glimpses of their bleak, bitter future together

Mary Shoe fic: authorial inserts of their own lovingly-described footwear adorning TV characters

xpreg: genetic testing reveals that the baby will grow up to be a mutant

Big Sang: exchanges for epic-length songfic

RCS: following the U.S. Supreme Court's logic, Real Corporation Slash takes off

What's your prediction?

Ahahahaha!

I kind of like the Big Sang idea. Not the kind of songfic where somebody inserts the lyrics to Evanescence into their fanfic and it's generally terrible, but IDK, I've read fics that say they were based on a song and they've actually been really good, in some cases expanding on the world created in the song. It usually depends on the quality of the song though- typical pop songs about love aren't going to work. I kind of wanted to write meta about this and how it relates to bandom.

Would epic length songfics be more like album fics? Like Scooby Road in fic form?

I've seen Yuletide fic for Rihanna's Disturbia & Janelle MonĂ¡e's Metropolis, plus [personal profile] norah wrote All These Things That I've Done, which is something like a fic version of Scooby Road for an album by The Killers.

Does bandom have many fics exploring how/why someone wrote a particular song?

Yeah, I loved the Janelle Monae one. There's also a Beatles one for Revolver by [personal profile] bossymarmalade.

I can't think of any fics like that off the cuff, but that doesn't mean there isn't any. There is some fic set in the universe of The Black Parade though.

Big Sang sounds like corporate villains in True Blood.

Combine two of those and you could have songfic about corporate jingles. Your bologna has a first name, you know.

(I am still waiting for hostile takeovers to be declared cannibalism.)

Combine a different two and you have product placement in your Converse/Nike fic.

If I wrote Nike fic, I'd have to warn for Major Character Death....

(No, I'm not surly about fucking Nike doing their best to take money away from my kid's school. Not at all. Why do you ask?)

Yeah, that's not really the fun, sexy kind of evil that makes for fanfic fodder.
sara: sunset, text reads, "Sometimes I grow so tired." (so tired)

No, not so much. It's that kind of greasy pedestrian evil that pays slave wages and takes textbooks from the hands of small children.
thirdblindmouse: The captain, wearing an upturned pitcher on his head, gazes critically into the mirror. (out pimpster! (Chasing Rainbows))

Aliens Made Them Stop Doing It

I've been collecting those. For SGA only, so no Vulcans, sorry.

Oh, that's awesome -- a Delicious search for fic tagged 'amtsdi' came up empty (vs. 1,027 results for 'amtdi').
