I actually kind of agree with both, if they'd choose a more entertaining idiom. I spent my weekend with indie fanboys, listening to their obsessions - they were kind of sweet, and it's also such horseshit. It's not diametrically opposed to what the girls in the fandom do. The HDGF reports seeing a zine, circulated at our Intimate Weekend on a Farm with The Mountain Goats, describing how the - fangirl - creator had given up meat for John Darnielle. For her love for him, that is. Which is totally different from reciting every bootleg recording and show... except not so much. The manlove, it was not all identification based. And the womanlove, it was not all self-abnegating. But maybe a little.
