See, I think that an opt-in system like that really goes against the principle of keeping a complete record, and I consider a complete, transferable record of public interactions to be in the common good.

But then, I think that this "controversy" over comments is, essentially, a straw man being advanced for wank purposes. I don't think there's a meaningful intellectual project behind it. On this, YMMV.
